2026. Hungary.Parliamentary elections
The party of Péter Magyar, TISZA, won over 53% of the vote in the general election, well ahead of the Prime Minister’s FIDESZ party, which secured just 38%. TISZA is expected to win 138 of the 199 seats in Parliament, securing a constitutional supermajority.
“Today, the Hungarian people have said yes to Europe,” the winner declared on Sunday evening.
On 12 April 2026, Hungary elected a new parliament.
After 16 years of Viktor Orbán’s FIDESZ government, the campaign was centred on the cost of living, the state of public services, relations with the EU and the war in Ukraine. Orbán has been at loggerheads with EU institutions for years over the rule of law and funding, whilst his foreign policy is often criticised for maintaining close ties with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Péter Magyar’s opposition party, TISZA, mobilised voters through mass rallies and a tour of the country.
