2026-2022. Poland. Parliamentary life

From 1989 until the mid-1990s, I photographed and documented events in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. It was a time marking the birth of the Third Republic: the restoration of Polish parliamentary democracy, the creation of new institutions, and the transition from an authoritarian system to representative democracy. The Sejm became a place of real change — a space for debates, disputes, decisions and symbolic gestures, where a new language of public life took shape.

I returned to political photography in 2022, during the parliamentary campaign and a period of mounting tension surrounding the state of Polish democracy. This marked the twilight of the Law and Justice government — a party which, over eight years, had profoundly transformed the state, bringing successive institutions, the public media and the mechanisms of checks and balances under its control. One of the symbols of this process was the 2016 parliamentary crisis, linked, among other things, to an attempt to restrict journalists’ work in parliament.

After the elections on 15 October 2023 and a change of government after eight years of PiS rule. Parliament is once again becoming a place of public scrutiny, conflict and accountability.
